They always gave me one camera to kind of use and shoot it the way I'd like to see shot. I don't know if the word "genius" is maybe taking it too high, but this is a very smart creative guy who is very much underappreciated. Especially when it comes to the military. They were supposed to present the supposed evidence that said things didn't exist. Was Sheldon the first person you shared it with?Frank Dux: Well, it was supposed to be a series. Why don't you go check it out?" Millions of Americans were first introduced to Tiger Tanaka in the Ian Fleming novel. Jean-Claude's character comes to the US to help out his brother, not with anything like revenge or violence on his mind. I'm not gonna stoop to his level. His contract was not for writing, it was for use of his name and a portion of his "real-life story." I was afraid to taste it, because I'm allergic to shellfish. Like M was Admiral Menzies. Okay, okay, you made your point. It sold well at the box office, grossing $65 million on a budget of $1.5-2.3 million. And so we climbed back over the wall and onto the set. Qissi followed Van Damme to Los Angeles and found himself in a bit part in Bloodsport and eventually played the villain, Tong Po, in Kickboxer. And then he was inspired to write a script. Which was Mike's move. Took me a long, long time to write that script. Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite. Or, better yet, where does that phrase come from?Frank Dux: Oh, that's easy. I really screwed up. One of these covert operatives was one Frank Dux. But then Menahem decided he didn't want to make the movie.Blake Harris: Why?Sheldon Lettich: In his words, I'm quoting, "Jean-Claude can't even play one character, how do you expect him to play two?" I was not an actor, so it was decided that I would be the writer member of this group. Now, Frank did contribute a number of ideas to the Bloodsport script, but he claimed these were "life events" that actually happened to him, not fiction. And that's one of the things that were attractive about Rambo so that's what we did with that script.Blake Harris: And what was it like working with Rambo himself?Sheldon Lettich: I was just so honored. Paul, June, and Jason discuss the 1994 science fiction comedy Tammy and the T-Rex. We're 60 stories in the air, I'm not kidding you. They were going to do a movie called Night of the Leopard but there were some problems with getting the script so now they needed a new one. He was friendly with me. Two, actually. It was also seen by Viacom. How are you going to get enough guys to fight against Michael who are even going to match his size? Do you still believe I that?" But I didn't sleep with a reporter beforehand and I certainly didn't break into my instructor's house and steal a sword. You can't just go in there and get it. That's water off my back. Because Jean-Claude uses people and chews them up as quick as he can. And at this point in time I don't think it's going to happen.Blake Harris: Ah, too bad. The ninja school if you want to call it that. And so we had a great time. And he did that to Sheldon several times. Around this time, Leon Isaac Kennedy [from The White House All Stars] had been in in a Chuck Norris movie called Lone Wolf McQuade and there was talk about doing a Part Two. And if Jean-Claude had found out that I really was theat that time, the real force, if you wouldthat was giving him all these elements, Sheldon's usefulness would have been short-lived. So those are the three elements. Not looking to find myself embroiled in the middle of a he-said, she-said war of words, I happily agreed to this request. "But I will say this," Lettich continued. And it was no-holds-barred, it'd very brutal and bloody, so it was called "Bloodsport." I also remember seeing something on Mayberry R.F.D. He had an answering machine at the time that had a limit of, like, 50 messages. Jean-Claude saw Menahem on the street, did a U-Turn and said, "Hey Menahem, remember me? I need to tell you about something that happened first. "Tagline:The True Story of an American Ninja, "All I request," Lettich started off by saying, "is that we try to keep discussion about Frank Dux to a minimum. This was all very, very low budget. His point was that they just wanted to show it was a kid in trouble who could have gone down a different path, but martial arts puts him on the right path. It's risk free with Nord's 30 day money-back guarantee! And not only did More beat Lee, but he actually let him score one. A franchise was the idea. "Below are some of the key points and accusations made in the piece: Frank Dux: By the way, the L.A. Times won't even defend the article anymore. Especially when you believe that person is your friend.Frank Dux: Exactly. I met Gladys, the woman of my dreams, I had a baby, and I'm miserable. (w/ Nicole Byer) 4/7/2023 More HDTGM all-star Nicole Byer (Grand Crew, Nailed It!) Frank lost that case. Anyways, they didn't pay me for doing my work on The Corsican Brothers and Delta Force 2. We gave our enthusiastic thumbs up and the next thing I know they're in pre-production and off to Hong Kong. People don't really know that about Lee, but he had one leg shorter than the other. He was just polite. You can listen to theBloodsportedition of the HDTGM podcasthere. Wow.Frank Dux: And he knocked Chuck Norris to the ground several times. And he agreed to that. So you know what that means. There were a number of people who really liked it. What made you such an extraordinary fighter?Frank Dux: Well, you know what? And I said, "To be the best you've gotta fight the best. At that point, it was to their advantage. What I had done was I had the fight, like in Bloodsport, but there was one little caveat difference: In between doing these fights, he was also doing stuff to help people on the street. It can't happen.". It's a tale so amazing that two months after the film's release, it was dismissed by the L.A. Times as nothing but a fabricated "macho fantasy." And Jean-Claude's phone began ringing off the hook. Everywhere else in my life I'm like a duck out of water, but put me in that arena and I just swim. It was going to be a surprise appearance. But Mark had permission to use his name and to basically say that this was a real story. I told Jean-Claude I might be getting the rights back to Corsican Brothers so he got Moshe on board. 8. The Robert DuBois version of Bloodsport made his live-action debut in the television series Supergirl, played by David St. Louis. That's just point of the absurdity of the whole thing.Blake Harris: And, when you were there, how did the reporter respond to all this?Frank Dux: I embarrassed the hell out of him. I didn't understand. Well, she'd seen it on TV, but she was too sick when the movie came out. "The fact that Frank hasn't been involved with any movie since 1994 says something doesn't it? So cool, in fact, that now we have a professional basketball team called The Raptors and no one raised an eyebrow about why a team from Tornoto, Canada would be named that. He saw the script. He was very stiff. A lot of those shots came from the camera angles I had been directing. The whole martial arts thing. How did that happen? I don't think Stallone has ever been given his due by movie critics. What I said to them [the LA Times] was that the only way you could get a hold of my records was to go to Federal Intelligence Court. Blake Harris: So we know how Sheldon entered the picture, but how does Jean-Claude Van Damme become involved with Bloodsport?Frank Dux: Oh, Jean-Claude tells this crazy story. In fact, we explored Post Traumatic Stress in the play, but the term PTSD had not even been coined yet. We'd shoot one side of the screen with one of the brothers and then Jean-Claude would have to change his hair, make-up, wardrobe and we'd have a double standing in for another brother. What follows is a conversation with Sheldon Lettich, who was thescreenwriter ofthe movie Bloodsport. In fact we did the casting at my apartment. He's got a lot of abilities. Then for Double Impact we thought: let's just go for it. Like I'm a kook because he comes out of a James Bond movie: You Only Live Twice. We pitched it to them and they were kind of interested, but at the end of the day they decided not to do it. Sometimes we get answers to questions like these, and other times we do not. It was a best of three, that's the way I recollect it. I kid you not.Blake Harris: So you weren't some kind of jiujutsu prodigy?Frank Dux: Not at all. And he knows it. with Andy Griffith, where Barney Fife was getting picked on and so he goes to learn judo. "Blake Harris: That's great. Are you kidding me? So he still didn't' have a lot of faith in Jean-Claude's acting abilities and decided not to make it. Only the part relating to the Kumite because he was going to hang on to the rest of his rights for the rest of his "exploits" for other movies. He did everything to basically poison the well with Jean-Claude and everybody I worked with. Plus, two cousins duke it out . Because there are so many issues with the rights to that project. We thought he was f***ing great. This was significant not only because he wrote the screenplay for Bloodsport, but also because Dux had said some unflattering things about the writer. Fun bit of trivia: Bloodsport is essentially a hoax perpetrated by Frank Dux, who made outrageous claims about this Kumite tournament that were never substantiated and are physically impossible. I believe that story is 100% true, because Michel Qissi was with him and he told me the same story. It was done on the exact same day that Masaaki Hatsumi, Stephen Hayes and Shoto Tanemurathese are guys who think no one in the world is a ninja but them and everyone else is a fake.Blake Harris: What about some of the specific claims that the piece makes? They did sequels and I've never gotten paid for them when I was supposed to. He felt bad for him. But to my pleasant surprise, Lettich was a complete gentleman. It took me years to understand the producer's point, but I do now. And the one twinning shot would sell it and it worked surprisingly well.Blake Harris: The next movie you worked on with Jean-Claude was his directorial debut, The Quest [1996], but only in the capacity of script polishing. But the only guy in the world who could kill Jean-Claude with his permission is Sylvester Stallone. "There is not Mr. Tanaka in Japanese history" of the Ninja families, Tanemura said. Tiger Tanaka, right? Armed with a gun that fires Kryptonite needles, Bloodsport nearly succeeded in his mission to eliminate the Man of Steel, but ultimately failed. He's demonstrating how to do a 1-inch punch and a 1-finger push-up. He went in and redid it. I wrote the script, got paid a small fee and I can't remember how much time passedprobably less than a yearand via another guy named Lou Horwitza financer who, I believe, did gap-financing at the timeLou took it to Cannon. But if we can cut it down, I think we can sell this novel. Later on, after Sheldon and I got to talking, I gave it to Sheldon and we reshaped it.Blake Harris: And at what point did the script become called Bloodsport. And that's how I ended up co-writing Rambo III with him. And that relationship led to other things down the road, as you know, but meanwhile my script Firebase was going around. And I walked out on the ledge and I was waiting for him because I knew he wasn't going to come alone. ". So we pitched him Legionnaire, gave him the treatment and Ed went for it.Blake Harris: You mentioned that Columbia passed on Legionnaire because it didn't "stick with the Van Damme formula." So my agent sent him Firebase and he responded very enthusiastically. But instead, he went back on his word and he did everything in his power to hold me down. Like Bloodsport is one of his best movies ever but it still resulted in a great episode. I don't remember in detail what our first interaction was like, but we just kind of hit it off.Blake Harris: Was it weird for you at all, as a Vietnam veteran, to be working on a book about the war that was written by someone who hadn't been there?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I didn't know that at the time. Let's meet face to face. And Menahem was dead set against it.Blake Harris: Why?Sheldon Lettich: [Laughing at the memory] His word for Jean-Claude was "poison." That it would be helpful and therapeutic.Blake Harris: And was it? JCVD RE-EDITED THE MOVIE HIMSELF TO GET IT . And interestingly enough, it was only after Jean-Claude did that to Sheldon that he testified on my behalf in the case for The Quest.Blake Harris: I understand. And of course he says he did (but he didn't). Even though we thought the movie was better, Menahem didn't. But he was telling me about this tournament that he participated in where all the best fighters in the world showed up. Sheldon Lettich: In Menahem's defense, I saw the first cutwe all the saw first cutand it was really bad. Live from Largo in L.A. they get into Samuel L. Jackson's infamous death scene, LL Cool J's relationship with his bird, Stellan Skarsgrd's new name, and how Saffron Burrows is the film's true villain. I wasn't there. Dux said the military ordered his record sabotaged to discredit him. I told Menahem that the new cut of Bloodsport was great and I thought it was going to do really well. And it was painful. And Tanaka was well known. I mean, the guy announced his malice. Over the centuries, however, these . And then one day I get invited down to the Long Beach Invitationals. He would punch the bricks, breaking them apart. Well you know how that ended up. And like I said, guys like Sheldon didn't help, putting a knife in my back.Blake Harris: So what was it like seeing him at the screening?Frank Dux: I was cordial. KUMITE! But yes, Idris Elba did an amazing job being the reluctant leader. What follows is the rest of our conversation Blake Harris: Given that you were mentioned several times in my interview with Frank, I can't help but start off by asking how surprised and/or frustrated you were to see the things he said?Sheldon Lettich: Frustrated? And here's the thing that gets me about how stupid people are. To my face he's pretending to be my best buddy, but behind my back he's doing everything in his power to undermine me in my career and take credit for my work.Blake Harris: I'm really sorry to hear that.Frank Dux: And that's a typical Hollywood story, right? And I said, "Okay, after dailies, I'll meet you up there." Apparently, Stallone had read the same article and he was thinking exactly the same thing. Start Free Trial. And we did. We probably fought for a good 5-10 minutes before getting split up. And I just want to end it right now." It would have been an expensive movie. Blake Harris: The Black Belt article got a lot of attention and certainly must have piqued the interest of some folks in Hollywood. On Bloodsport, we got into it during one of the fight scenes. It's incredible." And regardless of what any critics may say or believe, I don't think anyone would argue that you weren't extremely talented. So to compensate, they put me in these metal boots.
