I turned around a little bit before the turnoff for old tin cup jeep trail. Tin Cup is a neat place, has a lot of original buildings, the cemetery is a great walk through history. I'd agree with the last reviewer, a week, 2 at the most and it'll be clear of snow. The renegade drove a bit recklessly (he has learned from this) and ended up breaking on the trail. Fun day! Made it about 4.5 miles in from St Elmo. This is not an easy place to get to. The pass is basically boulders and rocks. My 7 month old had the best nap of the last week on this drive. My FunTreks manual has that section rated as "difficult", mostly due to the rocky section at the pass. At times the road was more of a river, which on other trails would have been more difficult, but you still have decently wide trails. During peak season dates, some sites can be reserved by visiting. Trail is completely snow-free. After that I was seeing people at least every minute so it is heavily trafficked after mid morning. This trail is perfect for the novice Jeeper. An ordinary stock Jeep, 4-wheel-drive vehicle or ATV is capable of reaching the top. She really could have been nice in telling us. While on the trail, we needed to rescue a vehicle that teetered over the edge of the road. Sign at trailhead says "Tracked Vehicles Only". ATV's and unlicensed off-road vehicles are not permitted on County Road 162 so riders must trailer their vehicles to designated OHV trailheads. Generally considered a moderately challenging route. The rock obstacles on the rest of the trail more than made up for that! Approaching from the east, we made it from St Elmo to a point about 300 yards from Tincup Pass. You can stay overnight at Mirror Lake Campground that offers 10 campsites and a restroom, not to mention the beautiful views of Mirror Lake and East Willow Creek. Mirror lake had 3 sections that were still covered in water but none of them were more than 2 feet deep. We ran Tincup Pass from St. Elmo to the town of Tincup then back. I did not drive Old Tincup which means the hardest obstacle for me today was a group of maybe 5 Jeeps parked in the complete middle of the trail, engines off, drivers hanging out in the gigantic camp site that they should have parked in. Ran from St. Elmo to Tincup. Looks like it's going to be impassable at Mirror Lake for a while; the lake's water levels are well above the road. Excellent trail! That part of the trail looked much wetter than the St. Elmo side. Sitting in a helicopter off the Trans Labrador Highway in central Labrador, Ray Sillitt said he's looking forward to learning how to gut a fish, clean a goose and try hunting for himself. Boulders along the Old Tincup Route are much larger than the main Tincup route. He needed 4wd because of his tires and wheel base, but seriously. a stock f150 did it. Colorado has had massive snows this past winter so mirror lake covers the road. The trail didnt get washed out anywhere between St. Elmo and tree line, but there was a bit of erosion overnight. The cemetery is unique make time to explore it. Beautiful views and the weather was perfect. We smartly decided to head back the way we came and were glad we did when we read about the backside to the town of Tin Cup was more difficult. Some years, the entire road along the east side of the lake can totally be submerged due to spring runoff. Just past the wooden bridge, turn left and head west, again following the sign for Tincup Pass. Either road has some camping along with it. Did not do Old Tincup (heard there may be people stuck on it blocking the route). Tincup Pass provides quite a few hiking opportunities, such as the trail to Fitzpatrick Peak. Amazing on the UTV even though extremely busy. What makes this trail worthwhile is the great views and lake water crossing . The views at treeline was great, and I plan to return to camp along the trail later this summer near one of the multiple streams along the trail. Great trail. Everyone behaved but the big groups of UTVs really need to get radios to communicate to the front to pull over and let others pass once and a while.
